For What It's Wirth... who will the Glazers, and Mark Dominik, eventually decide on to be the Bucs' 9th head coach?
I got a call the other night, from a fan who wants Jon Gruden back with the Bucs.
Well, that's not going to happen, just like Tony Dungy isn't coming back to coach the Bucs either... something about being fired from one place, tends to slant your thinking about returning. Besides, there is at least one thing that's attractive to a TV job for a former coach.. you can never lose another game.
But the point here is, a lot of fans want a big name, a splash move, someone who will help sell tickets... someone like Gruden, or Dungy, or Bill Cowher, or Brian Billick.
Thing is, that doesn't matter to the Glazers. They're not concerned about a big name, or someone who could sell tickets.
The NFL won't open their books, so I don't have the exact figures, but research shows me that the Bucs... and almost every other NFL team... make a profit before they sell their first ticket. It's the value of Network TV money.
The Glazers want a good fit, someone they can live with, even if it's not a sexy name. Tell me, how lathered up did you get this week, when you found out the first two candidates interviewed were Mike Sherman and Jerry Gray?
By the way, an avid Packers' fan in our newsroom says Sherman was a lousy play-caller for the Packers. Don't discount the ramblings of a Packer Backer.
Another scenario to consider.. despite all the guessing about the next Bucs' coach, and all the names mentioned, we may not have even mentioned the eventual winner yet. He could be the ultimate mystery man. The Glazers are so private with their business, they may have someone at the top of their list that no one has talked about yet.
Remember, Tony Dungy was their third choice... Jon Gruden came after they couldn't get Bill Parcells... and Raheem Morris was a complete surprise.
This game has a long way to go, unfortunately.
