Raleigh, NC (Sports Network) - Eric Staal had two goals and an assist, Justin
Peters earned his first career NHL shutout and the Carolina Hurricanes raced
past the Washington Capitals, 5-0, on Monday night.
Justin Faulk and Anthony Stewart scored in first 5:09 of the game to give the
Hurricanes a 2-0 lead and chase starting Capitals goaltender Tomas Vokoun.
Carolina opened a six-game homestand with its third win in four games. Andreas
Nodl also had a goal.
Peters, seeing time in place of injured starter Cam Ward, picked up his first
NHL shutout in his 26th game, including five this season. He had 17 saves.
Vokoun gave up two goals on seven shots and was replaced by Michal Neuvirth,
who made 30 saves on 33 shots the rest of the way. The Capitals lost for the
fifth time in their last six games and fell to 4-7-3 in their last 14.
