Maddon, Rays agree on 3-year extension

St. Petersburg, FL-- Manager Joe Maddon and the Tampa Bay Rays have agreed on a 3-year contract extension, that will carry through the 2015 season.

"I think it's the most interesting place in major league baseball, because there's a lot of freedom here," Joe Maddon said at Wednesday's news conference.  "There's a lot of freedom to get better, a lot of freedom to think... You talk about outside the box, it's about thinking... And trying new ideas, and trying new things... It's about having the people and resources to have these new things come to fruition, which we do have."

"Joe has been a central compoment to our organization's development and success," said Rays' Principal Owner Stuart Sternberg.  "As we all enter our seventh season together, I am proud for what we have accomplished and excited about what lies ahead."

"I have tremendous respect for Joe's leadership and for hsi unwavering belief in our players and the entire Rays' organization," said Rays' Executive Vice President of Baseball Operations Andrew Friedman."

Maddon will earn approximantely $6 million over the 3 years of the contract.  He's coming off his second American League Manager of the Year award... the Rays have made the playoffs 3 of the past 4 years... and only 4 active managers have been at their current job as long as Maddon:  Mike Scioscia, Jim Leyland, Ron Gardenhire, and Charlie Manuel.

The Rays announced that the club will donate $500,000 to Maddon's favorite charitable organizations:  Joe's Thanksmas and the Hazleton Project.
