Miami Beach, FL (CNN) - Video of an amazing rescue at sea-- 5 people stranded Thursday afternoon 15 miles east of Miami Beach in nine foot swells when their 29-foot boat becomes disabled.
Officers out on the water in full force this holiday weekend hoping to prevent accidents from happening.
Sheriff Al Lamberti of the Broward County Sheriff's Offices says, "17 people have already died in the state of Florida in boating fatalities. Florida leads the nation in boating fatalities."
The Broward Sheriff's Office is teaming up with the Florida Wildlife Commission during Memorial Day weekend. Officers will be out making sure boaters are following the law and they'll also be handing out these safety tips-- which include have a designated operator, driving a boat while intoxicated is illegal, file a boat plan with someone onshore and check your fuel levels frequently. You're also required to have a life vest on board for every person. And children under the age of 6 need to be wearing them at all times.
