PUNTA GORDA, Fla. (AP) - Inmates in one southwest Florida county picked 6,400 pounds of free oranges for their jail and local homeless shelters.

The Charlotte County Sheriff's Office said Friday that jail inmates were allowed to pick oranges for free for two days from the Peace River Plantation in Punta Gorda. Grove owners Waldemar and Henny Bokrand extended the offer.

The 6,400 pounds will help feed other inmates in the jail and some will be donated to the local homeless coalition.

Last year, inmates picked 10,000 pounds of oranges from the plantation for a food bank in Fort Myers.
