St. Petersburg, Florida - Inside Lauren Bates classroom at Lakewood Elementary in St. Petersburg, her science lessons are as creative and colorful as her rainbow colored lab coat.
This is Bates second year on the job and she is working hard to make sure the learning experience is fun.

Today, Bates is teaching them how to extract DNA from a strawberry.
Bates says science really should be hands on and the kids should get their hands a little dirty.
5th grader, Ember Jackson says it’s easier to learn if they can touch what they are talking about.
Bates says it’s important for the students to know that they really are young scientist. In fact they wear lab coats, gloves and goggles in the classroom.
9 year old Jonah says he can’t believe he had to the chance to touch the DNA of a strawberry.
A sweet lesson he won’t soon forget.
